Artist's Biography & Works For Sale
Arthur John Elsley was born in London to an amateur artist father who perhaps influenced his decision to become a professional painter. Elsley had natural talent and at the age of 16 he entered the Royal College of Art (formerly South Kensington School of Art) for formal training.
Elsley excelled in painting with immense detail tender and affectionate scenes of children and their pets – a combination which was irresistible to many. His paintings became sought after and were reproduced as prints frequently used in calendars, advertisements, books and magazines covers.
He died at his home in Tunbridge Wells in 1952, aged 91.
