Due to the continued success of selling works by Cecil Kennedy we now have one new painting that has recently arrived. The work is called A Spring Bouquet. Measuring 20 x 16 inches the canvas is in wonderful condition and housed in the original frame from the 1960's. A great painting. We also have one new work by artist Harold Clayton called Flowers in a White Marble Vase which is dated from 1963. The painting measures 18 1/2 x 22 inches. Both of these charming works are ready to hang. These would make ideal birthday, anniversary or Christmas presents when you might be stumped what to buy! The Famous Old House Gallery is now showing 17 paintings by this ever popular Suffolk artist. The latest to arrive are three great ones. We have a small painting dating from 1975 of Boxford Church looking from Butchers lane. There is the original price ticket on the reverse showing £36! I'm afraid we will need rather more than this princely sum today showing what a lovely investment these paintings have become. The second painting is a much larger scene of Honfleur Harbour in France. I have to say the colours are so alive it could have been painted yesterday and there is an enormous amount of detail in the scene including up to 50 people and around 7 boats. We have the original receipt from a gallery in East Sussex when the painting was last sold as a retirement gift in 1999. And lastly we have an 'Old Farm Barn' scene beautifully painted with a number of Cows in a rather wet field, dating back to 1981. So if you are looking for that elusive Clive Madgwick painting maybe we can help out. They do make great gifts for that special occasion be it birthday, retirement or just to surprise someone. See the Modern British section of our website to see all 17.

Edouard Cortes was a famous French painter who lived between 1882 and 1969. His work is well documented and there have been several books written about his work including 'Le Poete Parisien de la Peinture' by David Klein. We are very fortunate indeed to have six original works by Cortes on view and for sale. His Parisian paintings are famed for their use of light and movement and depict Parisian life at the turn of the century in the varying seasons. His winter examples are particularly vivid. The paintings we have show Café de la Paix, Porte Saint Martin, Place de la Republique, Boulevard St Denis and the Champs Elysees. The Boulevard St Denis and Place de la Republique paintings are a pair and measure 6 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches and date from circa 1910/20. One of the Porte Saint Martin paintings is an early work from 1905 and is a lovely winter scene measuring 16 x 21 inches. Although Cortes was a prolific painter his works sell for considerable sums with collectors around the world seeking out the very best examples to add to their collection. French work is something that we are very passionate about especially Parisian street scenes and we are favoured with handling the sale of works by Antoine Blanchard, Eugene Galien-Laloue, Georges Stein, & Gustave Madelain. Rural landscapes by Henri Biva are also favoured in our stock and we presently have two wonderful examples called Water Lilies on the Marne at Creteil and Au bord de Riviere. For a full selection of our French work please visit the European section of our website.

African wildlife paintings always conjure up that longing for a visit back to the African continent and a hot, humid safari trip to see the maginifcence of the wild animals in their natural habitat. However, we can't all just drop what we are doing and pop over to Kenya or Tanzania for that top up of African culture. To help out, we have decided to hold an exhibition of African art. We can't guarantee hot weather but we can guarantee a warm welcome. On show are six paintings by the artist Donald Currie Grant; we have two of African cats, one of Buffalo and three canvases of Elephants, two of which are an impressive 40 x 60 inches. Of the large paintings one is a magnificent scene showing a herd of elephants on the plain of a snow capped Mount Kilimanjaro. We also have work by Heywood Hardy (Lion Cub), Tony Karpinski (Zebra) and Pip McGarry (Walking Lion) to compliment Donald's work. Also on display are works by Rish Gordon from Australia who grew up in Kenya. Her unique and highly collectable glass etched bowls depicting African animals are really something different. We have ten examples showing lions, tigers, kudu, caracal and elephants.  So for that art gallery experience with an African flavour why not call into our gallery in deepest Suffolk for that really different experience.

I have a little story to tell. In fact two stories. They are actually both the same really so I will wrap them into the same blog. One piece of advice to other gallery owners though - never judge a book by its' cover! What I mean to say is never judge the person who comes through the front door! A recent example demonstrated to me just how judgemental I might be. It had been a trying day with lots of lookers but no buyers and I was beginning to wonder where all the purposeful buyers might have gone when suddenly the doorbell rang. I opened the door and immediately asked my two visitors to mind their way down our front step. We have had a few near misses and the first lady coming in was quite elderly and using a walking stick, the second was her daughter. They had come to see the works by Clive Madgwick. As the elderly lady looked at the first one I wondered in my mind if the price tag of £1450 might be too much for her. I had imagined the days when she might have earnt ten bob a week and thought the idea of paying this princely sum for a painting unimaginable. After browsing the ten or so Madgwick paintings she then turned and asked me where the painting was with the donkey in it. It was then that I realised she had been in before. The painting she was enquiring about was a lovely farm scene by the artist Walter Hunt and yes we did still have it. She beamed as her eyes saw it for the second time. I explained that it was nearly ten thousand pounds and asked if was this too much and she replied 'that's doable' To cut a long story short, she now has the painting on her living room wall. She is 91 next month. I thought what a great thing to treat yourself. The second half of the story is about a nice gentleman who came in treat himself also. He too liked the work of Clive Madgwick and when he got one from his family for his 90th birthday he couldn't resist coming in to add to his collection, so now he has two. I say congratulations to the nonagenerians, they really are trailblazers.

As a gallery owner, it is always pleasing to help a prospective buyer find the painting they really want to purchase but in the case of two recent sales I have to be honest and say the artist's work has sold itself! All we have had to do is wait calmly for the buyer to say 'right ok I have made my choice'. It does help of course when there is a good selection and in the case of flower paintings by Cecil Kennedy we always have a good choice. Until recently we had six to choose from but that is now down to four. Our two sales have been very rewarding, not just because we got a sale but because we really did help satisfy the demand of two discerning buyers. The first buyer was from the USA and we shipped the painting all the way to West Virginia. The second buyer was much more local and it travelled just down the road, over the county border and into Essex! It is interesting to note that in each case the buyers were torn between two examples that they really liked and their hardest decision was 'which one shall I have'. It really was a case of the work by the artist being so tempting. Anyway, two really satisfied clients and new homes for the work of Cecil Kennedy.
