Bruno Jean was born in France in 1946. He migrated to Australia in 1971 where he worked professionally as a photographer, illustrator and commercial artist. In 2015 he painted a portrait of the veteran Australian actor Michael Caton which won him the Art Gallery of NSW Packing Room Prize and the People’s Choice Award in that same year, making him the third artist to have done so in the history of the Archibald prize. The Archibald Prize, first awarded in 1921, is Australia’s favourite art award, and one of its most prestigious.
