Artist's Biography & Works For Sale
Edward Brian Seago was born in Norwich on the 30th of March to Francis Brian and Mabel Reeve Seago. At the age of eight he was diagnosed with ‘Bouveret-Hoffman syndrome – a condition that causes the heart to beat abnormally fast. This meant that the young Seago was kept home from school and away from strenuous activities and therefore spent much time in bed starring and studying the skies hence his fascination with skyscapes.
At the age of fourteen, Seago won an award from the Royal Drawing Society where he studied briefly. Later on in his career he would receive guidance from the landscape artist Bertram Priestman, Sir Alfred James Munnings and Sir John Alfred Arnesby Brown, although he was essentially a self taught artist. He also took inspiration from other great English artists particularly John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough and John Crome to name but a few.
Edward Seago’s subjects ranged from equestrian, landscape, urban, marine and even still life. He travelled widely during his life starting from the 1930s when he joined a circus to Venice; he also visited Northern France, Holland, Portugal, Hong Kong, Antarctica and Africa. Edward Seago is undoubtedly one of the most popular and talented British artists of the last century, he developed a strong and dedicated following throughout his career including that of the Royal Family and he was one of the official artists to capture the Queen's coronation. During 1956/7 he joined the Royal tour of the Falkland Islands and dependencies aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia where he painted alongside HRH Prince Philip on the deck of the ship. From around 1945 his were among the first solo exhibitions where people queued and were sometimes limited to one painting each. His paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy, other British exhibiting societies and the Paris Salon. He was elected R.B.A. in 1946, A.R.W.S. in 1957 and R.W.S. in 1959.
Edward Seago is considered one of Britain's great 20th century painters and his work is collected worldwide. His paintings from his time in Hong Kong during 1962 are particualrly rare and command high prices.
