Henri Biva was born in France and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and l’ Academie Julian in Paris. He was under the guidance of Léon Tanzi (1846–1913), an esteemed realist painter and also Alexandre Nozal (1852–1929) a respected landscape artist during his time at the École des Beaux - Arts.

In 1892, Biva received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes for his remarkable landscapes and flower paintings. He went on to win the third and second class medals in 1895/6. Then upon recommendation of Le Ministre de l'Instruction Publique et Beaux-arts, Henri Biva was decorated Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur, on 29th November 1900, and breveted by the Grand Chancelier on 12th December of the same year.

All these accomplishments, together with the quality of his paintings brought Henri Biva continued commercial success and public renown.
