Ian Houston was born in the ancient town of Gravesend in North West Kent in 1934. He studied initially at the Royal College of Music and subsequently at St Martin's School of Art, London.
Hebegan exhibiting his paintings in London in 1956 and it was during this time that he met the famous East Anglian artist Edward Seago. Seago became his mentor and encouraged him to switch from bird painting to land and seascapes. Ian later moved to Norfolk where he gained greater inspiration for his paintings from the vast East Anglian skies, flat landscape and peaceful waterways. His impressionistic style capturing brilliantly the atmosphere of this part of England.
Ian Houston has exhibited extensively in numerous galleries world-wide including Australia and Hong Kong and his paintings are held in the Royal collection and corporate institutions such as Barclays Bank to name a few. In his life time, he has enjoyed commercial success and continues to paint and hold exhibitions. His paintings show a clear debt to his mentor Edward Seago but still maintain a unique and distinct quality that show the individual skill of Ian Houston as an incredible artist in his own right.
