Leslie Marr was born on August the 14th at Aykley Heads in Durham City in 1922 to John Lynn Marr and Amelia Rachel Thompson. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and graduated with a Master of Arts from Cambridge University.

He joined the R.A.F in 1942, serving in both the UK and in the Middle East as a flight lieutenant. After leaving the R.A.F. he studied art at Heatherley’s School in Pimlico, then the Borough Polytechnic now London South Bank University under the tutelage of David Bomberg.

In 1947 Leslie Marr and other David Bomberg’s students exhibited at the Archer Gallery in London under the collective name of the 'Borough Group and in 1948 a group of the same name was formed with Bomberg as its first President and Marr was elected founder member and Secretary.  This same year Marr married the step-daughter of David Bomberg, Dinora Mendelson.

According to Marr, his time with Bomberg was pretty intense and eventually they had a huge fallout which led Marr to give up painting for a while and take on motor racing in the 1950’s. He participated in two Formula One World Championship Grands Prix and also competed in several other non- championship races.

Marr lives in Norfolk and continues to paint.
