Artist's Biography & Works For Sale

Marie-Yvonne Laur was born in France in 1879. She went on to study art in Paris and qualified as a genre artist. As the middle classes expanded in the 19th century so did the popularity of owning domestic pets, this gave rise to a high demand for cat and dog paintings. Laur chose to specialise in cat paintings following in the footsteps of great artists such as Arthur Brunel de Nueville and other cat artists of the time. She signed her work 'Yo Laur', the name by which her contemporaries affectionately called her.

Laur exhibited her work at the Salon des Artistes Francais and she became a member there in 1908 having received an honourable mention for her work previously.

Her draughtsmanship was excellent and the playful animation of her subjects, together with her use of rich colouring makes her work immediately appealing.
